5475 inmates benefits from alternative penalties programme

Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa, Director General of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing, said 5475 inmates have so far benefitted from the application of the alternative penalties programme.

The rate of returning to crime has also dropped to 2.2%, he said, adding that this indicated the success of the programme.

Shaikh Khalid briefed Ghada Hamid Habib, Ombudsman Secretary-General on the updates of the programme and the services, facilities and training it offers, during her visit to the Open Prisons Complex.

The open prisons programme is an extension of the success of applying alternative penalties, which is an implementation of the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Shaikh Khalid said.

The visit reviewed the objectives of the open prisons programme as a means of upholding societal security and upholding human rights values.

The Ombudsman Secretary General expressed her appreciation for the efforts put into the open prison complex.
