Oman Marks World Meteorological Day

Muscat, The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) today joined the world in marking World Meteorological Day.

This year’s celebration is themed “Early Warning and Early Action”. It highlights ways of developing early warning systems against extreme weather risks, as well as tsunami warning systems. It also sheds light on the importance of climate data and boosting coordination between national meteorological centres and disaster management authorities to improve prevention, preparedness and response.

The latest report issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) indicated that climate change, which is caused by human activity, has begun to affect a large number of extreme weather phenomena. Those phenomena include heat waves, heavy rains, droughts, and tropical cyclones. Heatwaves have been more frequent and intense since the 1950s; This called for an initiative to emphasize the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

In keeping pace with global trends and climate challenges, the CAA announced the formation of a national committee to deal with climate change and protect the ozone layer.
