Burkina Faso agrees to send troops to Niger

Burkina Faso’s Authorities issued a decree on Thursday to send troops to help defend Niger alongside the coup leaders, in case of any foreign intervention.

Burkina Faso’s Defense Minister Kassoum Coulibaly stated, “This commitment is to fight against terrorism,” adding, “What affects Niger’s security fundamentally affects the security of Burkina Faso.” The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) agreed to activate a “standby force” to restore democracy in Niger after generals toppled and detained Bazoum.

Niger was plunged into turmoil on July 26 when former commander of the presidential guard Abdourahamane Tchiani, led a military intervention that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

Bazoum was elected in 2021 as the first Arab president of Niger, noting that Niger witnessed four military coups since 1960.
