129 Killed in Attempted Prison Break in DR Congo


Democratic Republic of Congo’s government said at least 129 people were killed while trying to escape from the central Makala prison in the capital Kinshasa late on Sunday.

In a statement, Interior Minister Shabani Lukoo today said a fire had also broken out in the jail’s administrative building, including its hospital. Some 59 people were wounded, he added.

He added that 24 people were shot dead, while others suffocated in the crowd.

Shabani said that there was a loss of lives, several injured and mainly material damage.
