Muscat: In implementation of the Royal orders of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik instructing Muscat Municipality to carry out Maidan Muttrah (Muttrah Square) project, which won first place in the Belarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design, a ceremony was held under the auspices of Sayyid Saud Hilal Al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, to hand over the project.

The project’s handing-over memorandum was signed at Al Wahat Club yesterday with Muscat Municipality.

The gesture seeks to utilise youth talent to portray Omani civilisation landmarks as facilities that serve all segments of society, while at the same time lending an aesthetic touch to the selected sites. The project seeks to boost the beauty of Muttrah, with an iconic bridge taking centre stage in the city square encompassing a variety of facilities.

The project envisages streamlined approach catering to the needs of all segments of society, including people with disabilities. Its aesthetic outlook features green and aquatic spaces and a garden of sculptures.

The project features an iconic curved, angled bridge over the waterfront of the Muttrah Corniche that is inspired by the sword of Imam Al Salt bin Malik.

Designed in a way to replicate the flight of birds over the sea, the bridge also acts as a frame through which some of Muttrah’s most iconic landmarks can be seen.

The Maidan Muttrah project also includes displays that show the interplay between light and water, giving an amazing visual experience for the people.

The bridge surrounds a multi-use plaza that includes a dancing fountain, retail stores and cafes and restaurants. The function was attended by Sayyid Said Sultan Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of Culture, who also heads the Prize Committee, and Ahmed Mohammed Al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality.
