Abdullah Bin Zayed hails IAEA’s support to UAE’s nuclear peaceful program

WAM ABU DHABI: H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, hailed the support extended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to the efforts by the UAE to develop its peaceful nuclear energy program.

He emphasized that cooperation with the international body is a pillar of the development of the UAE’s peaceful program.

Sheikh Abdullah also appealed to Iran to join the Convention on Nuclear Safety.

Sheikh Abdullah made his remarks as he received the Director General of IAEA, Yukiya Amano, and his delegation on a current the UAE.

For his part, the IAEA chief, who earlier toured Barakah, the selected site of the UAE’s first nuclear reactor, expressed appreciation of the UAE’s successful and transparent efforts to develop its own program. He also expressed high admiration at progress made by the UAE.

He stressed that “the UAE plays a leading role among the nations which are developing nascent programs”, and expressed belief that these efforts would set a model for other nations willing to develop peaceful nuclear energy programs.

The meeting discussed the latest developments in the UAE’s peaceful nuclear program, measures taken by the UAE in this regard, the efforts by the international agency to advance nuclear safety and the lessons taken from Fukushima nuclear disaster. The meeting emphasized importance of IAEA’s efforts to ensure nuclear safety in member states and the preparedness of the UAE to support developing nations in peaceful nuclear energy applications such as healthcare, industry and humanitarian work. The two sides addressed ways to jointly support these programs in order to achieve these noble goals.

Matters of common interest, IAEA’s role in promoting nuclear safety and non-proliferation as well as the importance of diplomatic efforts to resolve pending issues were discussed at the meeting.
