ABOU FAOUR TO THE GOVERNMENT: WHERE ARE THE PROGRAMS TO ACCOMPANY LIFTING OF SUBSIDIES?

Member of the Democratic Gathering, MP Wael Abou Faour, affirmed that the Progressive Socialist Party will not relinquish its quest for social justice, stressing that the suffering that the Lebanese citizen is experiencing today at the social level is something that the Party cannot accept nor be silent about.

“We were amongst the first to call for stopping the policy of theft and smuggling through subsidies. However, halting the subsidies on goods and imports was supposed to be coupled with a direct support to the citizen through a package of social benefits, which has not taken place to-date,” Abou Faour said, asserting that his Party cannot accept this regardless of the considerations.

He added: “We were and still are the first to demand financial and economic reform, but not at the expense of the citizen similar to what is happening today by ceasing all social programs, from the program to support the most underprivileged families to the social protection program to the financing card.”

Abou Faour regretted that some cabinet ministers do not take into consideration the social suffering of the Lebanese citizen, for neither the social programs have been activated nor consumer price controls by the Ministry of Economy have been witnessed, cautioning that all this might lead to a social explosion.

The MP’s words came during a dialogue meeting with internal PSP branches held at the Kamal Jumblatt Social and Cultural Center in Rashaya earlier today.
