Artificial Insemination Succeeds in the Sultanate

Muscat—- The specialists of the Animal Production Research Center at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries succeeded in obtaining the first child born from the artificial insemination process on al Jabali local goats (triple birth). This is the first time in the Sultanate where artificial insemination technique has been used in goats.

Eng. Rashid bin Saud al- Habsi, Director of the Animal Reproduction Research Centre said, We have succeeded in using the technique of artificial insemination on local goats (Jabali). Artificial insemination is an important means to accelerate genetic improvement in animals, which contributes to the dissemination of genetically distinct genes, in a short period compared to natural ways.”

He added: “This experiment will be used in two animal research centres in Wadi Quriyat and Salalah during the next mating season (October 2018) in order to obtain the highest genetic return from the males used in the process.”

The specialists of the Animal Production Research Center in Al Rumais started using the artificial insemination technique since 1990 to inseminate the local cows with imported seminal fluid using sires for the Jersey and Holstein dynasties. The technology has been distributed on many of the Ministry’s artificial insemination units and is currently being expanded through the distribution of sperm sires on the veterinary clinics of the Sultanate.
