WASHINGTON, Kuwait’s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Human Rights Affairs Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah hailed on Friday the discussions with the US officials on human rights progress in Kuwait and cooperation in this domain.
In statements to KUNA at the end of her two-day visit to Washington, Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the visit.
She pointed out she was heading a large official delegation that comprised representatives of a number of government agencies concerned with human rights, including the ministries of justice, interior, information, the Public Authority for Manpower, and the Public Prosecution.
Sheikha Jawaher disclosed that the Kuwaiti delegation met in Washington US Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons Cindy Dyer and US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Christopher Le Mon.
During their meetings, the two sides exchanged views on human rights issues and th
e Kuwaiti delegation briefed the American officials about human rights achievements and the latest and most prominent developments in this field in Kuwait.
The Assistant Foreign Minister indicated that the American side praised the measures taken by Kuwait to protect the rights of expatriate workers and combat human trafficking.
The American side also appreciated Kuwait’s keenness to empower women, which was reflected positively on the high percentage of Kuwaiti women working in the public and private sectors, especially in the judicial, police, and diplomatic corps.
They also admired the steady rise in Kuwaiti women’s share in leading positions, which reached 28 percent.
Sheikha Jawaher and the accompanying delegation also visited the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington (AGSIW) where they met with the Institute’s President Ambassador Douglas Silliman, Executive Vice-President Ambassador William Roebuck, Senior Resident Scholar specializing in the affairs of the State of Kuwait Kristin Smith Diwan an
d Associate Researcher Muhammad Al-Mutairi.
During the visit, Sheikha Jawaher reviewed the historical Kuwaiti-US relations and Kuwait’s human rights commitments as well as Kuwait’s progress in human rights.
She also discussed cooperation between Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry and the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington.
For his part, Ambassador Silliman welcomed the visit of Sheikha Jawaher and her accompanying delegation, which includes representatives of the Kuwaiti judiciary in addition to many executive departments related to human rights issues.
He pointed out that the discussions with the Kuwaiti delegation were “constructive and useful” and focused on strengthening the partnership between Kuwait, the United Nations, governments and non-governmental organizations in the field of human rights and the challenges facing countries to meet the highest human rights standards.
