Blinken, Burhan discuss short-term ceasefire in Sudan

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke Saturday with Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces General Abdel Fattah al Burhan about “the ongoing talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia aimed at reaching an effective short-term ceasefire.

The talks aim to facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance and restoration of essential services, said State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller in a statement, adding “in this step-by-step process, the Secretary urged flexibility and leadership”.

Blinken again condemned “the violence by both parties that has resulted in the death and injury of many Sudanese civilians, underscoring that agreement in Jeddah would allow the provision of humanitarian assistance and essential services that are desperately needed by the Sudanese people.

“The United States is unwavering in its support of the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people for a civilian government and a stable, democratic Sudan,” the statement affirmed.
