Borrell: ready to do what is necessary to stop violence in Gaza

European Union High Representative Josep Borrell Friday said that the Union is ready to do whatever is necessary and useful to stop the violence in Gaza, but the EU is not launching a new initiative.

“We are ready to do whatever is necessary and useful,” he told journalists ahead of an informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Stockholm, Sweden, which holds the current EU Presidency, noting that he is in touch with his Egyptian and Emirati colleagues.

“We are not launching any European initiative. There are already enough initiatives but we have to support the ones which are in the lead,” he said saying in the lead are the Arab countries.

Borrell said the informal gathering in Stockholm will discuss two main topics, the Ukraine war and ties with China.

“We have to continue supporting Ukraine for the long haul,” he said.

“China will be a big issue today,” said Borrell adding that they will discuss a paper on China to define the position of the EU towards it.

“With China we have a problem of values, different systems .. and we have an issue of strategic security which are linked with Taiwan and war in Ukraine,” he clarified.

“We cannot have normal ties with China, if China doesn?’t use the strong influence that China has on Russia in order to stop the war,” he added.
