Diego Lopez Becomes Messi Biggest Penalty Nemesis

There is something of an anomaly

in Lionel Messi’s attacking record as he failed from 12 yards once again

against Espanyol, putting Diego Lopez in a unique club.

No other goalkeeper has denied the Argentine twice from the

spot, but a leap to his left hand side parried Messi’s shot wide in the

Copa del Rey on Wednesday night.

It was also in the Copa where Lopez last denied the Barcelona

star, and he is now the only man to do so twice having saved a spot-

kick while in goal for Villarreal in January 2008.

Overall, Messi has scored 63 of his 81 penalties, a 77 percent

success rate perhaps under what the Blaugrana talisman would

consider his potential, the Spanish MARCA newspaper reported.
