EU, Japan Sign Protocol to Include Cross-Border Data Flows as Part of Economic Partnership

The European Union (EU) and Japan have signed a protocol, initiated by the Belgian Presidency of the Council, to incorporate provisions on cross-border data flows into the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement.

This move, aimed at bolstering data governance and facilitating the free flow of data, ensures legal certainty and prevents data localization measures between two of the world’s major digital economies.
