GOB nominee for House speakership falls short of winning

WASHNGTON, Jim Jordan, the Republican Representative of Ohio, failed to win the House speakership on the first round of voting on Tuesday.

The ardent ally of former President Trump got just 200 votes, thus falling short of winning 217 votes of the 432 lawmakers present at the ballot. Given the Republicans’ slim majority, Jordan could not afford to lose more than four votes, but as many as 20 of his fellow Republicans voted against him.

Republicans control the House by a narrow 221-212 margin, giving them little room for error on a divisive voting like this one.

On the other hand, all 212 Democrats voted for their leader Hakeem Jeffries Jordan was nominated last week to be speaker after House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., quitted the race. Trump had endorsed him for the job. (end) rsr.gb
