LEBANESE EXPATRIATE BODIES IN AN OPEN LETTER TO THE GOVERNMENT: WE WARN AGAINST CANCELING THE VOTING OF LEBANESE RESIDENTS ABROAD FOR ANY REASON WHATSOEVER

Lebanon’s expatriates’ institutions abroad addressed an open letter to the Lebanese government, warning against “the consequences of the measures taken to obstruct the voting of residents outside Lebanon by designating their polling stations several hours away from their places of residence.”

The expatriates’ bodies rejected the statement by Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, and some other statements by a number of politicians, which “indirectly hint at the possibility of canceling the vote abroad, due to the existence of some difficulties, particularly at the financial level.”

“The voting of Lebanese citizens residing abroad is determined by the constitution and the law, as one of the basic rights of the citizen, and preparing and securing all necessary steps for holding elections abroad as well as at home is the responsibility of the Lebanese government, particularly the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs & Emigrants, and the Interior,” the letter confirmed.

It concluded by strictly cautioning against “cancelling the voting of Lebanese emigrants for any reason, underlining that this is a constitutional and legal right of the Lebanese citizen.”
