A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted Tokyo and its vicinity on Friday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

But there were no immediate reports of major damage. No tsunami warning was issued for the 7:03 p.m. (1003 GMT) quake the weather agency said. An operator of a nuclear plant in Ibaraki, northeast of Tokyo, said there were no signs of abnormalities at the facilities. Shinkansen bullet train services in the region were temporarily suspended, but resumed afterwards.

The focus of the temblor was off the eastern coast of Chiba Prefecture adjacent to Tokyo at a depth of 50 km, the weather agency said. The quake registered lower 5 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in parts of Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures. The agency defines an intensity of lower 5 as strong enough to make hanging objects swing violently and most unstable ornaments fall.

Friday’s quake followed a 5.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern part of China on May 11.

Japan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, accounting for about 20 percent of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude six or greater.
