MDO Launches Ahjaar Mining Project

Liwa, Minerals Development Oman (MDO) held a ceremony marking the official launch of Ahjaar Mining in the Wilayat of Liwa, Governorate of North Al Batinah.

The project figures among ventures undertaken by Oman Investment Authority (OIA).

The production capacity of the 2.2 sq km gabbro stone project stands at 2.4 million tons, First Phase.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of Sheikh Saif Hamyer Al Malik Al Shihi, Governor of North Al Batinah.

Saif Ahmed Al Jabri, Director of Projects at, said that the project targets local and international markets due to the importance of gabbro stone in global quarry industry.

Qabbro stones are now exported to Qatar, said Al Jabri, noting that that the company selected the best crusher company to ensure that the product is final and of top quality.

A geological and economic feasibility study conducted by MDO revealed that there are a recoverable amount of about211 million tonsof gabbro in a mine life of about 50 years, covering an area of 2.2 square kilometres.

Accordingly, Ahjaar Oman company was established in 2019 and the project was set in motion, with operations partnered by Assarain Group and Al Fajr Al Alamia Company, and a number of agreements signed for the procurement of the target quantity for the First Phase estimated at 2.4 million tons of gabbro. He company plans to increase this quantity to reach 5 million tons in the next stage of the project.

Gabbro is considered among industrial crude materials in high demand by GCC and regional construction companies.
