Merkel, Scholz Confer With State Leaders On Coronavirus Measures

Berlin, Germany’s caretaker Chancellor Angela Merkel and her likely successor Olaf Scholz have begun consultations with the premiers of the federal states after the country’s highest court found anti-coronavirus measures taken earlier this year were legal.

The Federal Constitutional Court ruled that the central measures of the so-called coronavirus emergency brake of the federal government from the third wave of the pandemic were not unconstitutional.

The court dismissed several lawsuits that were directed against the contact and curfew restrictions and school closures ordered in the spring. According to the court, the infringements of fundamental rights were justified by “overridingly important public inteAntonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) called for an end to fighting in Ethiopia, urging Ethiopian leaders to follow the example of the peace process.

“The peace process in Colombia today inspires me to make an urgent call to the protagonists of the conflict in Ethiopia for an unconditional and immediate ceasefire,” Guterres added, in remarks made in Bogota, the capital of Colombia.

The Ethiopian Cabinet announced on 2 November a state of emergency across the country, and explained that it will remain in effect for a period of six months.
