Oman Affirms Importance of IAEA’s Programmes Utilizing Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes

Vienna, The Sultanate has underscored the significance of activities and programmes undertaken by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to utilize atomic energy for peaceful purposes. Oman pointed out that this approach contributes to the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

This was stated in the Sultanate’s speech before the 65th round of IAEA General Assembly held here. The speech was delivered by Yousef Ahmed Al Jabri, the Sultanate’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna.

The Sultanate affirmed its stance on making the Middle East Region free of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear arms. “This can be achieved only through the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the application of the IAEA’s comprehensive safeguards,” said Al Jabri.

Al Jabri added that the Sultanate also reiterated its support for the creation of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East. He stressed that the region must also be free of other mass destruction weapons.

In its speech, Oman laid emphasis on the need to pursue this (non-proliferation) track through consensus among countries that will meet during the forthcoming session due to be held under the presidency of Kuwait. The purpose, said Al Jabri, is to reach the goal of having mankind live in a peaceful and stable world.
