Oman Human Rights Commission Holds Seminar on Sustainable Development, Human Rights

Muscat, Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) today organized a symposium titled “Sustainable development and its relationship with human rights”.

The symposium drives home the idea that sustainable development reflects positively on human rights and human dignity.

The symposium brought together 70 participants from various institutions and government agencies. It is organized by OHRC in cooperation with the Arab Parliamentarians Forum for Population and Development in Jordan.

Dr. Hamoud Ahmed Al Yahya’ee, Chairman of the Services and Social Development Committee at the Shura Council, member of OHRC, said at the opening of the symposium that the event is held within the framework of OHRC’s fulfilling its duty to promote and protect human rights, spread public awareness and highlight aspects of relevance to bridging the gap between rights and mechanisms of protecting them.

For his part, Dr. Mohammad Al Smadi, Secretary General of the Arab Parliamentarians Forum for Population and Development, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that there is ongoing cooperation between the Arab parliamentarians’ forum and OHRC. Two experts from Asia and the Arab region attended the symposium to discuss human rights among 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, said Al Smadi.

On his turn, Dr. Farrukh Usmonov, Executive Director of the Asian Parliamentary Forum for Population and Development, said that the event constitutes part of the activities of the Forum of Arab Parliamentarians on Population and Development and the Asian Population and Development Association in Japan.

He underscored the significance of aligning sustainable development goals with human rights, for the common good of all humanity.

Three working papers were discussed at the symposium. They were presented by international experts in the field of sustainable development.
