Oman Marks World GIS Day

Muscat, The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, marked the World Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day which falls on 16 November every year. A number of public and private sector establishments participated in the event.

The ministry reviewed the most prominent findings in the field of spatial science technology and digital information infrastructure developed in line with the requirements of Oman’s modern urban expansion strategy. The strategy seeks to ensure sustainability of urban cities and the enactment ofappropriate measures to meet the needs of smart cities.

The ceremony marking GIS Day was held under the auspices of Dr. Khalfan Said Al Shuaili, Ministerof Housing and Urban Planning. It addressed three main themes in the areas of digital geotechnical fields, intelligence, geographical analysis and geographical services.

The event included a dialogue session on the future vision of GIS in Oman. Experts and spatial information technology specialists took part in the event.
