Omani Physician Wins Harold Johnson Blood Transfusion Award

Muscat, Dr. Arwa Zakaria al-Riyami, Senior Consultant at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital’s Department of Hematology, has won the Harold Johnson Award of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) for a research paper she submitted recently.

Dr. Arwa, who is also the Director of Hematologic Disease Department at the Omani Medical Specialty Board, said in a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA) that her research was conducted in cooperation with members of the consultative council of the ISBT.

The paper, which represents the Middle East region, was titled “Impacts of Coronavirus on Workers in Blood Banks in the World in the First Months of the Pandemic,” she added.

As many as 283 workers in blood banks, aged 40 years and below—among them 124 physicians, participated in the study, said Dr. Arwa.
