The European Parliament (EU) has passed a groundbreaking law aimed at restoring 20% of the EU’s land and sea by 2030, with a further goal of complete ecosystem restoration by 2050.
The law, agreed upon with member states, targets degraded ecosystems across all EU countries to bolster climate resilience, biodiversity, and food security.
To meet these ambitious targets, member states must improve habitats covered by the law, prioritizing Natura 2000 areas until 2030.
Additionally, measures to enhance biodiversity in agricultural ecosystems, such as boosting common farmland bird indices and restoring drained peatlands, are mandated.
The law also includes provisions for planting three billion trees, restoring free-flowing rivers, and preserving urban green spaces.
