Researchers Unveil Insights into Proton-Coupled Electron Transfers

Massachusetts: Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have uncovered new insights into proton-coupled electron transfers (PCET) at electrode surfaces, crucial for fuel cells and electrolyzers.

The study, led by MIT chemists, detailed how protons move between electrodes and electrolytes, impacting energy conversion technologies. Understanding PCET mechanisms could enhance fuel cell and electrolyzer efficiency.

Contrary to existing assumptions, they found PCET rates peak at extreme pH values rather than neutral.

Moreover, the forward PCET reaction dominates at pH 10, challenging previous models assuming equal contribution from forward and backward reactions.
