Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam prepares major Vermeer exhibition

Amsterdam, The world-renowned Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is preparing an extensive exhibition of works by the Dutch Baroque painter Johannes Vermeer with loans from several countries.

“This promises to be the largest Vermeer exhibition ever,” the museum announced today. The display is scheduled to open in the spring of 2023.

The complete works of the world-famous painter from Delft (1632-75) are comparatively small. Experts assume that there are 37 paintings.

In 1996, at the largest Vermeer exhibition in the Kingdom of the Netherlands to date, 22 works were put on display in the Mauritshuis art museum in The Hague.

The Rijksmuseum owns four Vermeer paintings, including “The Milkmaid.” These will be joined in 2023 by loans from the Mauritshuis, which is co-organizing the exhibition, from Ireland and the United States, among other collections.

Taco Dibbits, Director of Rijksmuseum said, “We would not have thought it was possible that so many museums would be willing to lend their top pieces”.
