Muscat, The Sultanate is experiencing an alarming rate of new infections with Covid-19, causing a spike in the number of patients admitted to hospital wards, intensive care units and daily death cases.

Statistical analyst Ibrahim Ahmed Al Maimani said that a study of June 2021 data shows that the month witnessed the highest record of infections and deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic. As many as 51,321 new cases of infection were registered in June 2021, compared to the highest number of infections (39,089) in July 2020. In the meantime, the rate of recuperation dropped from 92% to 87.5%, respectively.

In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Al Maimani said that June 2021 also registered the highest number of daily deaths (755, so far), with a daily rate of 25 deaths, compared to mortality peak of 344 deaths in last April, with a daily rate of 11.5 deaths.

The number of patients hospitalized in June multiplied by 98% (1,597), compared to the situation by the end of last May (808), an increase of 789, so far, said Al Maimani.

The number of patients admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICUs) also multiplied by 110% (247 by the end of last May, compared to 519 by the end of June 2021), Al Maimani added.

It is observed that, on a 24-hours-base, the number of hospitalized patients this year registered a high record on 27 June (214), followed by 22 June (209), and 23 June (203), said Al Maimani.

In earlier comments, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Saeedi, Minister of Health, member of the Supreme Covid-19 Committee, said that the health sector in the Sultanate has become “exhausted” and that the current wave of Covid-19 is “the worst and most persisting”.

The Ministry of Health is pressing ahead with vaccinations, now being administered to people aged 45 and above and the segment of pregnant women as part of the National Covid-19 Immunization Plan.

Next Sunday, 4 July, the Ministry of Health will begin vaccinating a new segment, 18-year-olds and above.
