RNO organises symposium highlighting cultural role of Shabab Oman vessel

Muscat: The Royal Navy of Oman (RNO), acting in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and the German University of Technology on Wednesday organised a symposium titled “Shabab Oman: A Cultural Role and a Civilizational Dimension”.

The symposium was held under the auspices of Salem bin Mohammed Al Mahrooqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism.

The symposium is a step forward in efforts to prepare for Shabab Oman’s candidacy to book a place in the UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Working papers presented during the symposium dealt with the cultural message of the sail ship and society’s response to its voyages.

Al Mahrouqi said in a statement that “today’s symposium is an important step in promoting the registration of Shabab Oman in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage”.

His statement touched on the ship’s important civilizational role in sustaining Oman maritime history—its traditions and concepts of cultural heritage.

He hoped that the outcomes of this symposium would advance the vessel’s candidacy file.

The minister described Shabab Oman as an instrument for honing the skills and capabilities of trainees, who have been offered exposure to challenges and difficulties faced by sailors in various circumstances. He underscored the significance of utilising knowledge and expertise gained from the ship’s voyages to implement relevant projects.
