Russia accuses Ukraine of destroying Kakhovka Nova dam

Russian mayor of the town of Nova Kakhovka in Kherson region Vladimir Leontiev Tuesday accused the Ukrainian army of blowing up the Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River, causing floods in the area.

The continuous Ukrainian missile attacks destroyed the dam, drowning most infrastructure facilities and about 30 houses, while also cutting off power, the mayor told Russian TV on Tuesday.

The Russian army started evacuating the area’s residents, said Leontiev, adding that the dam’s destruction led to a big environmental damage that is yet to be assessed.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Tass news agency said that the authorities have formed an emergency committee to deal with the aftermath of the dam’s destruction.

The Kherson region joined Russia last September, after the majority of citizens voted in favor of the decision.
