Sudanese Army calls amassed Rapid Support Forces “infringement on law”

Sudanese Army warned Thursday of what it described as amassed forces in the capital and other cities by the Rapid Support Forces, calling it a blatant infringement on the law.

The movements came were unsanctioned by the armed forces, explained an army-issued statement, adding that it is the armed forces responsibility to maintain peace and security, and thus it is its duty to sound the warning alarm.

On its part, the Rapid Support Forces declared earlier that it is spreading forces across country, as part of its regular duties of safekeeping peace and security, as well as combating human trafficking, illegal migration, drug trafficking and armed robberies.

Chief of National Umma Party called for an urgent meeting of the political forces and uniformed services to put an end to this situation, saying that security situation calls for more than regular routine procedures.

The past few weeks saw divisions between Army Chief Abdulfattah Burhan and Rapid Support Forces Chief Mohammad Hamdan Dagalo, inciting fears of clashes between the two forces.

Issue of integrating Rapid Support Forces is perhaps the main point of dispute between the two as the army is calling for clearly defined transitional time period and the forces are demanding a transitional period that could last to ten years.

Other disputed matters include position of the forces’ leadership, recruitment, as well as army reformation.
