Suicide blast on deputy governor funeral kills 11 in Afghanistan

At least 11 people were killed and dozens other received injuries in a suicide blast targeting a mosque during the funeral of the deputy governor of Afghanistan’s northern Badakhshan province on Thursday, said officials.

Taliban’s Interior Ministry spokesman for Afghanistan Abdul Nafi Takoor said in a statement that at least 11 people were killed and 30 injured in the mosque blast in Badakhshan’s provincial capital, Faizabad.

“The Ministry of Interior of the Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan condemns this brutality of the disgraced enemies,” the statement said.

The blast targeted a mosque in the Hesa-e-Awal area where funeral prayers of the province’s former deputy governor, who was killed in a car bomb attack on Tuesday, were being offered.

Number of casualties is reportedly feared to rise.

The so called-Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) or Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack and stated that it was a retaliatory measure for an operation in Kunar province.
