Sultanate Participates at FAO 33rd COFI

Rome, The Sultanate, represented by the

Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, will take part at the Food and

Agriculture Organization (FAO) 33rd Session of the Committee on

Fisheries (COFI), being held at the Organization’s headquarters in

Rome during 9-13 July 2018.

The Sultanate’s delegation is led by Dr. Hamad bin Said al-Oufi,

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for Fisheries

and membership of Dr. Abdul Aziz bin Said al-Marzouqi, Director

General of Fisheries Resources Development, Dr. Abdullah bin Hamad

al-Nahdi, Director of the Maritime and Fisheries Sciences Center,

Nasraa bint Salim al-Hashemiyah, Secretary at the Sultanate’s

Embassy in Italy and Fadya al-Jamal, Coordinator of International

Organizations in Rome.

The conference included an input by Dr. Hamad bin Said al-

Oufi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for

Fisheries during which he said that fish production in the Sultanate

increased by 24% in 2017 to 348,000 tons and 39% in 2016 compared

to 2015. He affirmed that the Sultanate is determined to enhance the

fish production especially from fisheries whose potentials are not

properly tapped to increase production to above 1.3 million tons by

2023.

He noted that the Sultanate has more than 25,000 artisanal

fishing vessels and boats that provide source of income for more than

49,000 fishermen. The Ministry implements a number of initiatives to

improve fishermen working conditions and standard of living.
