Tehran announces Iranian diplomat detained in Belgium returns home

Iran declared Friday that its diplomat Assadollah Assadi, held by the Belgian authorities on charges of planning to attack an exiled Iranian opposition group’s rally in France, returned home.

Assadi arrived at Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran after he spend several years in Belgium’s prisons, Iran’s official news agency reported.

In a statement published on its official account on Twitter earlier in the day, Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Omani efforts resulted in a deal between Iran and Belgium on the mutual release of the “detained” nationals in the two countries.

Meanwhile, Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander de Croo announced Friday that Belgian aid worker Olivier Vandecasteele was flying home after 455 days in prison in Tehran.
