Transport, Communication Ministry Organises Workshop on MLC

Muscat, A workshop on “Rights of the Seafarers

in the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006″ was held at the City

Seasons Hotel, Muscat today.

The two-day workshop aims to regularise marine labour to meet

all requirements to ensure their rights according to international

standards and requirements. The workshop is organized by the

Ministry of Transport and Communication.

The workshop was held under the patronage of Said bin

Hamdoon al-Harthy, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport and

Communications for Ports and Maritime Affairs. He explained that the

workshop came to discuss the legal and technical rights of seafarers

among all relevant parties, including the governmental and private

authorities, ports and workers, to come up with recommendations, as

well as discussing the issue of ships stranded in ports.

The workshop is attended by specialists from the International

Transport Workers’ Federation, in addition to 38 participants from

various relevant bodies in the Sultanate, including the Foreign Ministry,

Administrative Affairs Council for Judiciary, the Ministry of Legal Affairs,

the Ministry of Manpower, the Omani Lawyers Association, Oman

Human Rights Commission, Maritime Security Center, General

Federation of Oman Trade Unions, Omani ports shipping agency

companies and ship owners in the Sultanate.

The workshop includes the presentation of several working

papers on the issue of increasing the number of foreign vessels

stopping at Omani ports and the problems caused by this stop. Such

cases will be discussed, various legal and technical viewpoints will be

heard to come up with recommendations that will limit them directly

and indirectly, which will directly and indirectly affect the operational

activities of Omani ports.
