Transportation Ministry participates in inaugural ITU’s Youth Advisory Board meeting


Halima Mohamed Ismail, from the Telecommunications Directorate at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, has participated in the inaugural meeting of the Youth Advisory Board of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in Geneva, upon an invitation from Doreen Bogdan-Martin, ITU Secretary-General.

The meeting deliberated on empowering youth within the ITU’s scope, fostering collaboration between the Union and youth organisations, and academic institutions in emerging technologies. Discussions also encompassed the global challenges and opportunities associated with artificial intelligence, emphasising the establishment of international standards to ensure mutual operation and security, thereby fostering innovation. Moreover, contemporary trends in satellite technology and space sustainability were explored, alongside strategies to bolster telecommunications infrastructure resilience, emergency management, and effective electronic waste disposal solutions.

Halima Ismail moderated a dis
cussion session aimed at amplifying youth engagement in telecommunications and information technology. The session sought to present actionable ideas and recommendations to bridge the digital gap and leverage technology for societal benefit while promoting ITU’s initiatives globally.

Ismail also participated actively in the International Girls in ICT Day 2024 events, held concurrently with the meeting. These events were designed to inspire girls to pursue careers in information and communication technology, promoting diversity and technical proficiency.

Selected as a member of the ITU’s Youth Advisory Board, Halima Ismail joins 12 other young professionals from around the world, collectively bringing expertise in artificial intelligence, technology, space, infrastructure, and innovation.
