UN Security Council to Lift Sanctions on Eritrea

New York, The United Nations Security Council is

considering to lift sanctions on Eritrea next week after a rapprochement

with neighbouring Ethiopia.

A draft resolution prepared by Britain proposes an immediate

end to the sanctions imposed on Eritrea, including arms embargoes,

travel and assets freeze, the Reuters reported.

France and some other member states are keen to maintain

some diplomatic pressure on Eritrea where the Council members can

propose changes to the draft resolution during the negotiations this

week.

The adoption of the resolution requires nine votes and no

objection from any of the permanent members namely the United

States, Russia, China, Britain and France.
