UoB, CERN sign ICA in research scientific field cooperation

The University of Bahrain (UoB) and the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) signed an International Cooperative Agreement (ICA).

The ICA was signed by Dr. Fuad Mohammed Al-Ansari, UoB President, and Charlotte Lindberg Warakaulle, Director for International Relations.

CERN, established in 1954, is an intergovernmental organization that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. It provides a unique range of particle accelerator facilities to researchers, to advance the boundaries of human knowledge.

The ICA between UoB and CERN is important for enhancing cooperation and international partnership in the field of science and technological advancement, Dr. Al-Ansari said.

He added that the cooperation with CERN will contribute to promoting Bahraini cadres and industries as well as providing the opportunity for the Bahraini researches to engage in scientific research projects in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) studies.

Dr. Al-Ansari highlighted that the ICA with CERN will enable academics and researchers from Bahrain to apply to join the educational institutions of the organization such as Particle Accelerators Study, European School of High-Energy Physics, Summer Student Programme, and CERN School of Computing (CSC).

Bahrain signed the ICA with CERN to establish a framework that facilitates long term opportunities for the local scientific scientists, researchers, engineers, teachers, students and technicans to participate in to partake in CERN programmes.

The ICA was facilitated by Ambassador Dr. Yusuf AbdulKarim Bucheeri, the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations and the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, President and founder of the Sheikh Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research, DR. Haifa Ebrahim Al-Khalifa, College Of Engineering Dean, Waleed Salah Al Meraj, Policies Director at the Prime Minister Office, and Mariam Al-shurooqi Director of Research Projects at the Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research

Dr. Al-Ansari was briefed on the nature and role of CERN during the visit.

UoB was a participating member in Muon Detectors Experience at CERN back in 2019.
