US urges warring parties in Sudan to deescalate tension

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged the warring leaders in Sudan to deescalate tension and resume conciliation talks.

“I urge General Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Degalo to take active measures to reduce tensions and ensure the safety of all civilians. The only way forward is to return to negotiations that support the Sudanese people’s democratic aspirations,” Blinken said.

His remarks came in a statement released by the State Department, early on Sunday, indicating that the secretary of state held consultations with Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud, Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, about the dangerous fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Security Forces.

The official statement noted that the fighting in Sudan threatened the security and safety of Sudanese civilians and undermined efforts to restore Sudan’s democratic transition “We agreed it was essential for the parties to immediately end hostilities without pre-condition,” Blinken said, referring to outcome of his consultations with the two ministers.
