Ministerial Committee Tasked with Assessing Cyclone Damages Holds First Meeting, Issues Decisions

Muscat, Pursuant to the Royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik to form a ministerial committee to assess the damages incurred to citizens’ homes and properties as a result of the tropical cyclone /Shaheen/, the committee held its first meeting today under the chairmanship of Sultan Salim Al Habsi, Minister of Finance, Chairman of the Financial and Economic Committee at the Council of Ministers.

The committee discussed the tasks of committees operating under the supervision of the National Committee for Emergency Management. Decisions have been taken to protect lives and restore normalcy in a direct and speedy manner through the supply of basic livelihood needs and resumption of public services in cyclone-stricken wilayats.

The Services Sector has been instructed to work in liaison with the competent authorities to speed up the process of road maintenance and restoration of services, bearing in mind the importance of securing public safety when reconnecting the electrical current and telecommunication networks.

It has also been agreed to mobilize the public health sector to address health and epidemiological issues.

About the operations of the Shelter and Relief Sector, it has been agreed to activate a certain number of centres to collect and distribute livelihood commodities to families in coordination with Oman Charitable Organisation and teams of volunteers in the affected wilayats.
