Munich— Germany and England remain winless in Nations League action after Harry Kane’s late penalty salvaged a 1-1 draw for the away side in Munich.

The Germans entered the match off the backs of a draw away to Italy, while Gareth Southgate’s side were keen to bounce back after a shock defeat to Hungary in Budapest.

Although the home side showed more initiative in the opening 45 minutes, the chances were few and far between as the two teams headed to half-time still locked at 0-0.

That all changed five minutes after the restart when Jonas Hofmann was left alone in the England penalty area. Joshua Kimmich picked out the Borussia Monchengladbach man, who spun and fired home past a helpless Jordan Pickford.

Unfortunately for Germany, who were looking to avenge their 2-0 defeat to the Three Lions in the quarter-finals of the European Championship, their hopes for revenge were dashed with minutes to spare.

Kane was taken down in the penalty area by Nico Schlotterbeck, with a short VAR check confirming the penalty. The Tottenham star stepped up and made no mistake for his 50th goal, moving him one clear of Bobby Charlton on England’s all-time goalscoring list, and just three behind Wayne Rooney, the Spanish MARCA newspaper reported.

As a result, both teams settled for a point each, with Germany now third in Group A3 on two points, one clear of England. Italy top the standings following their 2-1 win over Hungary in the other group match on the night.
